Ethnoparenting Seminar: Embracing Local Wisdom in the Modern Parenting

Sukabumi, October 14, 2024- The seminar with the theme “Exploring Local Wisdom in Childcare in the Modern Era” was successfully held in Sukabumi on Monday, October 14, 2024. The event was attended by 230 participants consisting of parents, educators, and observers of the world of children and parenting. The main objective of this seminar was to provide an understanding of the importance of applying local wisdom values in parenting, especially in the midst of rapid modernization and globalization.

Ith Vuthy, M.Sc., M.A., as the Deputy Program Director and Asep Subagja, S.Pd., head of the Capacity Building division at SEAMEO CECCEP were the resource persons in this event. Ith Vuthy highlighted the importance of the role of parents in parenting in the modern era which is full of challenges, ranging from technological influences, social changes, to economic pressures. She emphasized the need for parents to adapt to the changing times without forgetting the basic values in parenting. In addition, Ith Vuthy introduced Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory which explains how child development is influenced by a complex environment, ranging from the nuclear family to the wider community.

Asep Subagja explained about the ethnoparenting approach, which is a parenting method that emphasizes cultural and ethnic values. He discussed how this approach can balance cultural heritage with modern demands.  Asep also presented the results of SEAMEO CECCEP's studies on the application of local wisdom in parenting, such as the Sundanese culture study in Ciptarasa Traditional Village, Sundanese culture workshop in Kuningan, and Javanese culture in Yogyakarta. In addition, initial studies were also conducted on Minangkabau culture in collaboration with Padang State University (UNP) and Bugis culture in Makassar.

The seminar was closed with an interactive question and answer session. The participants enthusiastically exchanged ideas about the importance of culture-based parenting in the midst of modernization. It is hoped that this activity can inspire parents and educators to apply local wisdom values in parenting, so that cultural heritage remains alive and relevant in everyday life.
