Strengthen Early Childhood Care Educators: SEAMEO CECCEP Conducted a Parenting Program for Stunting Prevention in Ogan Komering Ulu, Indonesia

SEAMEO CECCEP has developed the Parenting Program for Stunting Prevention (PPSP) Model. The development of this model is a form of implementation of SEAMEO CECCEP's commitment from the national program to accelerate stunting prevention with BAPPENAS. This model aims to support the government program to accelerate the reduction of stunting prevalence rates, which by 2024 are expected to reach 14%. The development of this program has produced three activity plans, namely 1) Information-strengthening programs, 2)  Programs to strengthen parents' knowledge and skills, and 3) Programs to provide individual assistance services for parents.

On 13-16 June 2023, SEAMEO CECCEP organized a comprehensive training program for teachers and local government organizations in Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) District. The training aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of 30 Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE) teachers in reducing stunting cases and promoting holistic child development.

The training program focused on four key areas for effective stunting prevention and intervention. First, participants were provided with the skills to develop various informative media related to stunting prevention and management in collaboration with Local Government Organizations (LGOs) and stakeholders. Second, early childhood educators and practitioners are empowered to become facilitators in parenting sessions to disseminate knowledge to parents about stunting prevention and management. Third, teachers are trained to provide individual support and guidance to parents of children identified as stunted. Finally, the program aims to raise parents' awareness through parenting sessions that focus on stunting prevention and management.

The Head of OKU Education Office, Drs. H. Topan Indra Fauzi, MM, M.Pd, expressed his enthusiasm and support for the training program. This initiative is expected to reduce the stunting rate in OKU District significantly. SEAMEO CECCEP, in collaboration with the local education office, has previously collaborated in various programs to increase the capacity of teachers and parents to improve the quality of early childhood education. The successful outcome of this training will strengthen the potential for future collaboration between SEAMEO CECCEP and the education office to continue their efforts in advancing ECD practices in the region.

The SEAMEO CECCEP training program in OKU District is an important step towards combating stunting and promoting holistic child development in early childhood education. By equipping teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge and engaging parents in stunting prevention and intervention, the program aims to impact early childhood well-being in the community. The continued collaboration impacts early childhood well-being in the community and paves the way for further advancements in ECD practices. This contributes to improving the region's overall quality of early childhood education.
